Vanadium Redox Flow: How it works

Vanadium ions innately exist in several different oxidation states and possess the ability to gain (reduction) or lose (oxidation)

Scalability

VRFB energy storage systems are extremely scalable.

The energy storage capacity and output of VRFBs can be scaled up either by simply expanding the size of the electrolyte tanks, or by stacking additional modules to each other.

Sustainability

VRFB batteries are 100% recyclable

Vanadium electrolyte undergoes minimal degradation throughout its energy storage life in a VRFB. At battery end-of-life, it can be re-deployed into new VRFB units, or the vanadium can be extracted and re-purposed.

Lifespan

VRFBs have significantly longer lifespans when compared to Lithium-ion energy storage systems.

VRFB are capable of cycling more than 20,000 times over a 20-plus year lifespan with minimal performance degradation. Lithium-ion batteries can expect to see a 50% performance reduction between 500 to 5000 cycles.

VRFB can be left fully charged or completely discharged for extended periods with no effect on future performance.

Safety

Vanadium electrolyte is an acidic, aqueous (water-based) solution and does not contain any organic solvents.

As the concentration of vanadium compounds are very dilute, the electrolyte is essentially non-toxic:

  • No dendritic formations that shorten battery lifespan
  • No thermal runaway
  • No fires and explosions from organic solvents
  • No heavy metals and environmental contamination

Abundance

Vanadium is 10x more abundant than lithium.

Vanadium makes up 0.02% of the Earth’s crust – 10 times more than the presence of lithium (0.002%) and once mining projects are developed, Australia is poised to be a top-tier global producer, with the world’s third largest reserves after China and Russia.

Lithium supply is forecasted to be in shortfall by the year 2030, as demand will outstrip supply due to the growth in electric vehicle uptake.
